過(guò)去進(jìn)行時(shí)常用“was / were + v.-ing”形式來(lái)表示過(guò)去某一時(shí)刻或某一段時(shí)間正在進(jìn)行的動(dòng)作。過(guò)去進(jìn)行時(shí)可與表示過(guò)去的時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)如at 8:00 last night、at that time、at this time last Monday、from 8:00 to 11:00 yesterday morning等連用，也可與when或while引導(dǎo)的時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句連用。例如：

She was scared because a man was following her at that time. 她很害怕，因?yàn)楫?dāng)時(shí)有一個(gè)男士在跟蹤她。

—Was it raining at six this morning? 今天早上6點(diǎn)下雨了嗎?

—Yes, it was. / No, it wasn’t. 是的，下雨了。/ 不，沒(méi)有下。

注意事項(xiàng)

◆ 過(guò)去進(jìn)行時(shí)強(qiáng)調(diào)在過(guò)去某一時(shí)刻或某一段時(shí)間正在進(jìn)行的動(dòng)作，強(qiáng)調(diào)在這一過(guò)程中動(dòng)作的進(jìn)程和發(fā)展;一般過(guò)去時(shí)則表示在過(guò)去某個(gè)時(shí)間發(fā)生過(guò)的動(dòng)作或存在的狀態(tài)。例如：

He was doing his homework all the afternoon. 整個(gè)下午他在做作業(yè)。

He did his homework in the afternoon. 下午他做完了作業(yè)。

◆ 有些動(dòng)詞通常不用于過(guò)去進(jìn)行時(shí)，如like、love、hate等表示心理狀態(tài)的動(dòng)詞，appear、seem等表示表象的動(dòng)詞，see、feel、sound等感官動(dòng)詞，allow、decide、end等短暫性動(dòng)詞。

語(yǔ)篇演練

閱讀短文，用括號(hào)中所給單詞的適當(dāng)形式填空。

A traffic accident happened on the road near a restaurant. However, the car driver drove off. A policeman arrived at the place, and he had to ask the people who saw the accident some questions.

“What were you 1 (do) when the accident happened?” asked the policeman.

“Oh, I 2 (buy) some water in the shop, so I didn’t know what happened,” a man answered.
